Why I Am Running
My name is Megan Kuhl-Stennes and I am running for Hennepin County Commissioner, District 4. For the past ten years I have cultivated a family, an urban farm, and a passion for zero waste. I am running to engage and empower our community. Together we can advance an equitable and improved quality of life for all county residents.
I have a different approach to getting us through what often feels like very challenging times. Instead of simply maintaining the status quo, we have the resources, money, and energy to make far-reaching changes that address the root causes of community concerns: income inequality, climate change, lack of accessible and effective health care, and lack of access to quality housing.
Years of experience in community engagement have instilled in me a deep desire to connect community with the systems that dictate so many aspects of our day to day lives. County level government influences so many aspects of our lives—health and child care, licensing, libraries, solid waste, and collaborative policy making with cities, the state government, and other counties. Yet, the county government is very distant for the average resident compared to both city and state government. I am dedicated to building relationships with residents by being present and creating opportunity for dialogue. This will lead to a system that works for all of our Hennepin County sisters and brothers.
I have devoted my professional life to moving us to zero waste, which centers on designing and managing products and processes in a way that eliminates threats to our health and the environment. The principles and values of zero waste can guide decisions beyond how we treat physical objects. We need ethical and visionary leadership to shape a Hennepin County where we see the value and opportunity of all people, rather than one where we see some people as disposable.
I would be proud, honored, and challenged to represent District 4 on the Hennepin County Board. Together we can make this a fundamentally greater county. I am asking for your support and together we can make a difference.
